LOCUST GROVE, AR (May 18, 2013) – John Blankenship took home the biggest win of his racing career tonight at Batesville Motor Speedway. Blankenship won $20,000 by winning the Second Annual Bad Boy 98 sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, and marked the first series win for him this year. Blankenship pulled away at the end to score a convincing win over Brady Smith, Steve Francis, Billy Moyer and Jimmy Owens.

While Blankenship enjoyed the fruits of the win, Dennis Erb Jr. was left with what could have been. Erb led the first 67 laps of the race until smoke bellowed from his number 28 car forcing him pitside. Erb and Blankenship had put on a side-by-side battle for the top spot for most of the race until that point. Blankenship then ran away with the race as he went unchallenged over the last 30 laps of the event.

“I have to thank all of my crew, Tom Buckingham and everyone else, this is the biggest win we have ever had,” exclaimed Blankenship in Lucas Oil Victory Lane. “That was quite a race for the lead between Dennis and me, and then I saw smoke out of his car and I knew he was in trouble. This Rocket Chassis car has been good all year long, we have been knocking on the door for a big win like this since last year, and tonight it finally happened.”

“The track was really racy tonight,” said the winner afterwards. Blankenship started sixth in the stout field, but first had to withstand a solid challenge from Wendell Wallace early in the race. “Wendell was really good there early on until he had that flat; once he went out, we were able to stay close to Dennis with the caution flags. I have to thank all of my sponsors of course, Coal, Todd Case Trucking, Bear Cove Village, VP Fuels, Integra Shocks, and Cornett Engines.”

Smith, who won last week at LaSalle Speedway, came from seventh as he fought his way to a second finish. “Congrats to John on the win, he was gone there at the end! I couldn’t see him on the track anymore! Our car was tight early on, but as the race wore on, we got a whole lot better. Hey, this has been a solid two weeks for us. A win and a second place, we’ll take it, as we head to the Show-Me 100 next weekend.”

Francis, last August’s winner of Batesville’s biggest race, the COMP Cams Topless 100, had a solid finish in third as he held off Billy Moyer and Owens. Owens retook the championship points lead from Don O’Neal, who finished eighth.

Completing the top ten were Scott Bloomquist, Earl Pearson Jr., O’Neal, Eric Jacobsen, and Jack Sullivan.

In preliminary action, Earl Pearson Jr. set the overall time (Group A) amongst the 40 entrants, with a lap of 13.679 seconds. Bobby Pierce set the fastest time in Group B with a time of 13.738 seconds. Earl Pearson Jr., Steve Francis, Dennis Erb Jr., and Wendell Wallace won their respective heat races. Jimmy Owens and Billy Moyer Jr. won their respective B-Mains.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be back in action next weekend at the “Diamond of the Dirt Tracks”, Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO with the 21st Annual Lucas Oil “Show-Me 100″ presented by Protect the Harvest.
Steve Casebolt says that he’s already had a great season, and it’s only May. On Saturday night at the Cleveland Speedway, that season got even better after the Indiana driver scored a $4,000 victory in the Southern All Stars sanctioned Tennessee Memorial.

Track and series officials were forced into somewhat of a hurry up mode during the night’s events as dark clouds hovered over the east Tennessee track with rain not very far away.

Billy Ogle, Jr. set the pace early when he posted the fastest qualifying time in Group A and overall with a lap of 13.442 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval. Also locked into a starting position for the feature race from this group were Aaron Ridley, Randy Weaver and Skip Arp.

Casebolt earned the outside front row starting spot by posting the fastest time in Group B when he toured the speedway in 13.46 seconds. Also earning feature starting spots from this group were Ray Cook, Riley Hickman and Ivedent Lloyd, Jr.

William Thomas and Mike Weeks won the two consolation races used to set the remainder of the starting lineup for the 40-lap main event.

At the start of the feature, Casebolt took advantage of his outside starting position to grab the early lead over Ogle, Cook, Weaver and Ridley.

While the front runner was not seriously threatened in the early laps, there was plenty of scrambling just behind him. Weaver looked to be the strongest contender to unseat Casebolt from the top of the leader board during the early laps. The three time and defending Southern All Stars champion moved from his 5th starting position to 4th when he got around Ridley on the first circuit. Then, he went to work on Cook for the 3rd spot by lap four.

However, Cook was able to fend off Weaver and then offer up a challenge of his own when he went after Ogle for the runner-up spot.

A lap 16 caution for an incident involving Ridley and Bo Shirley provided Cook with the opportunity he needed. On the ensuing restart, the ‘Tarheel Tiger’ moved around Ogle and set his sights on Casebolt. Meanwhile, Ogle, Weaver and a hard charging Thomas engaged in a furious three-wide fight for the 3rd position that saw the three cars run in that formation for multiple laps.

Casebolt’s car worked well on the high side of the track while Cook tried valiantly on the bottom to get around. On a couple of occasions, the final coming on lap 36, Cook drew completely alongside but was never able to complete the pass.

At the finish it was Steve Casebolt, Ray Cook, William Thomas, Randy Weaver, Billy Ogle, Jr., Ivedent Lloyd, Jr., Skip Arp, Riley Hickman, Derek Ellis, Mike Weeks, Michael Asberry and Jason Hiett.

By Richard Allen

The second time did not prove to be the charm for Boyd’s Speedway as far as getting in its scheduled Spring Nationals race was concerned. For the second time in as many weeks, the dirt oval located in Ringgold, Georgia was forced to postpone its $4,000-to-win feature event due to weather conditions.

Despite the presence of dark clouds on the horizon, track and series officials tried desperately to get the race in on Friday night. With a light sprinkle falling, cars took to the track for hot laps and qualifying in a “hurry up” mode.

Billy Ogle, Jr. posted the fastest overall lap among the 30 cars to make an effort in time-trials. His time was 13.368 seconds around the 1/3 mile banked clay facility. However, it would all prove to be in vein as the rain intensified and officials were left with no other option but to call for a postponement. The event will be made up in its entirety next Friday night(5-24-13).

Spring Nationals promoter Ray Cook had polled his series regulars prior to qualifying to see just how many of them would be able to return a week later should the race be lost. Last week’s rain out had subsequently made this event the series finale for the ten race mini-series. After multiple competitors said they would not be able to return, Cook decided that race or no race on this night, the series standings would be decided.

Next week’s event will be for the posted purse money but not for series points.

As a result of that decision, points leader Steve Casebolt was crowned as the first Spring Nationals champion. The Indiana native pocketed $5,353 for his efforts over the nine race stretch that began at the Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee back in March.

“We had a lot of good runs,” Casebolt said of his team’s effort throughout the Spring Nationals. “We started off with a 2nd and a 3rd down at Bulls Gap and that made us think we had a shot at it. I think the worst run we had was a 9th and we ended up getting to win one so that was really good. We’ve already had a good season and its really just getting started, so if we can keep this going, we’ve got a chance to have one of my best seasons ever.”
