I miss the days of Earl “Pepper” Newby and Jimmy Nowlin and that rivalry there back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I remember Nowlin ran the track at the time and one season he tore the very bottom of the race track out with the road grader. Reason? He could hang with newby on a wet tacky track, but by the time the feature would roll around and the track was dry and slick, newby would run the very bottom of the track wth the left front tire actually running on the apron. He would turn laps down there that were incredibly consistent while nowlin would be balls to the wall up high and losing ground almost every lap. Those were some great late model battles. And i remember newby beating all the big boys one big race there at the duck…Ronnie johnson, jeff purvis, mike head … That was special because wins by local guys usually didnt happen when those big huge shiney haulers from out of town and out of state rolled into the pits.

I also remember gus bruce in his beat up old brown rusted mopar powered road runner or cuda maybe. That car was a piece of crap to look at, but man was it fast in that street division and he could wheel the hell out of it. Also there was david earl gentry in his # 56 monte carlo. He would run the high side and let the back bumper scrape along the rail in one and two lap after lap… He was also fun to watch because he was so good.
